Kakariki in the wild
Ulva Island

In december 2008 we had the luck to see kakariki of both possible species on Ulve Island.
But pictures we only could make from the redfronted parakeets.
Ulva-Island is a small island reachable via watertaxi from Stewart-Island.

On Stewart-Island we already saw Kakas and heard kakariki.
The first five pictures of the scenery are from Stewart-Island.
Both Islands are vegetated with temperate rainforests. The climate is cool and rich of rain. In winter light frost might cover the land.

Ulva Island is cleaned up from introduced predators and a highly relevant wildlife reserve of the fjordland-nationalpark.

Birdlife on this island ist continuously monitored and traps keep out predators from stewart-island.

The kakariki living there showed a behaviour that remained us of our pets at home.
The DOC placed here nesting boxes for the sattlebacks - a highly endangered species of New Zealand - but the kakariki attached the boxes soon. (Bild 7)
Spotting the feedingtrees of the parakeets was easy, because fallen flowers and leaves covered the ground. Maybe with some luck than we saw the parakeets in the high tops of the southern beeches.

Ulva Goodwillie, our guide on Ulva-Island told us that kakariki are often seen as pairs, only sometimes after the breeding- season you might spot them in small flocks.
