Kakariki in the
wild
Ulva Island |

In december
2008 we had the luck to see kakariki of both possible species on Ulve Island.
But pictures we only could make from the redfronted parakeets. Ulva-Island is a small island reachable via watertaxi from Stewart-Island. On Stewart-Island we already
saw Kakas and heard kakariki.
Ulva Island is cleaned up from introduced predators and a highly relevant wildlife reserve of the fjordland-nationalpark. Birdlife on this island ist continuously monitored and traps keep out predators from stewart-island. The kakariki living there
showed a behaviour that remained us of our pets at home.
Ulva Goodwillie, our guide on Ulva-Island told us that kakariki are often seen as pairs, only sometimes after the breeding- season you might spot them in small flocks. |
