Kakariki and their flock behaviour


In the wild, red crowned parakeets do not live in large flocks. Even during the breeding season they are usually only seen in pairs.
Social behavior in the swarm is usually limited to the direct partners, with exceptions to prove the rule.klick to enlarge
We have heard about some flocks, in which six or more red crowned parakeets got along great togethether..However, there are always birds that become aggressive in such situation and need to be separated as a couple.
 
klick to enlarge  In our flock, currently 7 birds, it's usually during the breeding season that rivalries between sexually mature roosters take place, and also  the hens can put up quite a fight  .
Our observations of aggressiveness increases with the intensity of the pair bonding and is most intense jst before laying the first egg of a clutch
