All species / sub-species of the Kakariki belong in New Zealand and the surrounding islands to the threatened species, one species is already extinct.

C. malherbi is with only four occurrences on the southern island of all together 200 individuals the mostly threatended species and therefore is as much as endangered as the Kakapo.
C.auripecps in on the main islands of New Zealand still more frequently to find and is the species with the lowest endangering status.

The only effecitve protection of the remaining population is the extinction or drastically iminution, of from people in the last centuries imported predators, like for example Possum, rat, fox, raccoon, as well as savaged domesticated cats and dogs.
