How to keep kakariki
The only way to effectively prevent kakariki from breeding in winter, is to keep them in an outdoor aviary.
Our aviary measures 3x3x2,5 meters (w x l x h) including shelter.
We feel kakariki can not act out on their tremendous urge to move about in smaller aviary’s.
For detailed questions about about free space and questions about socialization with other species, please consult other sites because we lack the experience.

Indoors, the best way is to provide them a bird-room.
Here the animals should find sufficient means to keep them busy and enjoy all-day free flight.
The size of the bird-room should be comparable with the size of an outdoor aviary.
Under these terms smaller aviary’s/cages that only serve them as a place to sleep, or as a safe spot while you are cleaning, can be of smaller size (say; 0,6mx0,8mx1,5m)
The less hours of free flight a day, the bigger the aviary/cage should be.

We call on you here to make purchase decisions in favor of this very agile birds and want to deliberately not give any other aviary sizes.
We keep three pairs in an aviary with a floor space of 3 X 1.5 m and a height of 2m, which can be divided into three separate parts.
On top of that the animals enjoy free flight all day every day and, if the weather is nice, they have access to the balcony as well. This way they can fly a straight 10 meters ahead.
